Batur is located in the mountainous region of Kintamani, in the north of the Indonesian island of Bali. It is a stratovolcano consisting of a vast caldera overlooking a lake of the same name. Mount Abang (2100 m) faces it.
Mount Batur in Bali is a still active volcano. Two violent eruptions, in 1917 and 1926, cost thousands of lives and destroyed houses and temples in the village below the volcano. Its last, much smaller eruption in 2000 was neither devastating nor deadly.
Mount Batur is very closely monitored and access to it is forbidden to the public whenever there is a risk of eruption. It is therefore not dangerous to climb it.
Even today, this mountain is considered sacred by the Hindus and religious ceremonies are frequently held there. The Balinese share it with the many travellers who want to reach its summit to admire the breathtaking panorama.
